Belmonte and Trancoso enjoy pleasant, settled early-autumn conditions, and the Douro valley is at its most alive, with the grape harvest (vindima) typically running through the month depending on the vintage.
Daylight shortens gradually, with sunset moving from roughly 20:15 to 19:15 across the month. Domestic tourism eases considerably after mid-September as the school year resumes, leaving heritage towns notably quieter. There are no major national holidays in September, so scheduling runs on standard opening hours.
September is harvest season across much of the country: grapes in the Douro, figs and late-summer fruit elsewhere, and the first game dishes beginning to appear on interior menus as the weather turns. It is an excellent month for wine-focused stops paired with heritage visits.
