Lisbon stays warm but coastal-moderated, generally in the high twenties Celsius. The Alentejo interior is at its hottest, frequently exceeding 35°C in the afternoon, and Belmonte and Trancoso, while cooler than the plains, still see genuinely hot days. The Douro valley is hot and dry ahead of the September harvest.
Daylight remains long through most of August, gradually shortening toward the end of the month. August is the peak month for Portuguese domestic holidays, meaning some family-run restaurants in smaller towns close for a week or two, and popular coastal areas are notably busier; the interior heritage towns are less affected but still benefit from advance restaurant reservations. There are no major national public holidays in August.
August is prime season for figs, melons and grapes beginning to ripen ahead of the harvest. Coastal dining remains strong, though travellers should expect some smaller interior restaurants to be closed for the owners' own summer holiday.
As in July, an early-start daily rhythm suits August best. Shorter itineraries anchored in Lisbon with selective interior excursions are often more comfortable than a full 10-day route during the hottest stretch of the month.
