Weather Across Portugal's Jewish Heritage Regions

Lisbon's Atlantic-moderated climate keeps temperature swings gentler than anywhere else on the route: mild, damp winters generally in the low-to-mid teens Celsius, and warm but rarely extreme summers in the high twenties. Rain is most likely between November and March, and afternoon sea breezes take the edge off summer heat, making Lisbon comfortable across nearly the whole calendar.

Inland and largely flat, the Alentejo experiences Portugal's most extreme seasonal swing: cool, occasionally cold, wet winters give way to the country's hottest summer afternoons, often exceeding 35°C in July and August. Spring, particularly April and May, is the region at its best, with wildflowers and comfortable warmth before the summer intensifies.

Home to Belmonte and Trancoso, this is Portugal's coldest region by elevation, with genuine winter conditions including occasional snow between roughly December and March. Summers are milder than the Alentejo owing to altitude, and spring and early autumn offer the most comfortable balance for walking through the hillside villages.

The Douro combines hot, dry summers well suited to vineyard visits with cool, often misty winters along the river. September's harvest period is the region's most animated season, while spring offers a green, quieter alternative for travellers less focused on the wine calendar.
