Lisbon to Tomar is generally around 140 km, roughly a 1.5-hour drive, making it a natural first stop when heading inland. Continuing from Tomar toward the Serra da Estrela region adds a further 2 to 2.5 hours, which is why most itineraries treat Tomar as a waypoint rather than a separate day trip from Lisbon.
Belmonte and Trancoso sit roughly 45 minutes to an hour apart, generally well under 60 km, making them a natural pairing on the same day. Guarda, a common overnight base in the region, is typically 25–35 minutes from either town, providing a convenient hub for exploring the Serra da Estrela heritage sites without frequent hotel changes.
From the Serra da Estrela region, Castelo de Vide is generally a 2 to 2.5-hour drive south, often broken with a stop in a smaller Alentejo town along the way. This leg typically forms the final stretch of the mountain-to-Alentejo portion of an itinerary before returning toward Lisbon or continuing toward the Spanish border.
Because the heritage sites are dispersed across several hours of interior driving, our itineraries sequence towns geographically rather than by importance alone, minimising backtracking.
