Lisbon typically sits in the low twenties Celsius with increasing chances of rain later in the month. The Alentejo cools further, comfortable for walking throughout the day. Belmonte and Trancoso see mild days and cool nights, with autumn colour beginning in the surrounding chestnut groves, and the Douro valley, past its harvest peak, remains a beautiful and calmer place to visit.
Daylight continues to shorten, with clocks moving back at the end of the month, which noticeably compresses late-October afternoons. Republic Day (5 October) is a public holiday with typical closures. Visitor numbers ease steadily through the month, making October one of the calmer periods for museum and site visits.
October brings the height of chestnut season in the Serra da Estrela, along with new-season olive oil beginning to appear and the last of the Douro's harvest activity. It is an excellent month for hearty interior cooking paired with heritage visits.
