The Judiaria and the Iron Trade
Torre de Moncorvo's medieval prosperity rested on iron — the nearby Reboredo mines supplied the region for centuries — and its Jewish community participated in the town's commercial and artisanal life. The judiaria occupied a documented zone of the old town, and the community appears in the customary medieval records of taxation and privilege.
After 1497, the town's New Christian families shared in the pattern of Trás-os-Montes: absorption in name, persistence in practice. The region's crypto-Jewish survival into the modern era is among the best documented in Portugal, and Moncorvo's families were part of it.
