Jewish Settlement Along the River
Jewish communities were present in several Douro towns before 1496, engaged largely in trade and small commerce tied to the river's role as a transport route. Lamego, in particular, retains archival references to a medieval Jewish quarter, and the wider district's proximity to the Spanish border made it a route for converso families moving between kingdoms in the sixteenth century, when crossing into or out of Portugal was itself a matter of Inquisition scrutiny.
