Trás-os-Montes and the Long Survival
Trás-os-Montes — 'beyond the mountains' — was Portugal's most isolated region, and that isolation preserved what persecution erased elsewhere. Families across the region's towns and villages maintained fragments of Jewish practice into the twentieth century, often without fully understanding their origin: Sabbath customs, dietary rules, mourning practices, prayers remembered but not comprehended.
Vila Flor, as the region's natural centre, shared fully in this history. Its New Christian families were documented by the Inquisition, and the surrounding villages — Carção, Vimioso, the Mogadouro country — supplied many of the communities that Barros Basto's mission sought out.
