The Judiaria of Pinhel
Pinhel's Jewish quarter occupied a defined zone within the medieval walls, in the streets below the castle hill, and the town's Jewish community is documented through the fifteenth century. The quarter retains the characteristic narrow grain of Beira judiarias: small granite houses, tight lanes and doorways that occasionally preserve the marks researchers associate with Jewish occupancy.
A house within the quarter has been identified as the former synagogue, one of a small number of buildings in Portugal where such an identification has been made with reasonable confidence. The building is not a monument in the conventional sense, but its survival gives the visit a focus that many comparable towns lack.
