A UNESCO Wine Landscape
The Alto Douro Wine Region has been UNESCO-listed since 2001 for its terraced vineyards, some cultivated continuously since Roman times and shaped further by monastic and later commercial wine production. The region's remoteness historically made it, like much of northern Portugal, a place where converso communities could maintain a lower profile than in Lisbon or Porto.
