A Border Shaped by War and by Flight
Towns such as Marvão, Castelo de Vide and Elvas were built and rebuilt as military strongpoints across the long Portuguese-Spanish conflicts of the medieval and early modern periods, and their proximity to the frontier also made them natural points of passage for conversos moving toward or away from Spain in the centuries following the 1497 conversion decree.
