The Hidden Juderías of Extremadura

Hervás preserves one of Spain's most intact former Jewish quarters, its half-timbered houses and narrow lanes largely untouched by later development, while Cáceres and Trujillo — both UNESCO-listed old towns — retain documented Jewish quarters within their walls. The region's proximity to the Portuguese border meant frequent movement of converso families between Extremadura and towns such as Castelo de Vide across the frontier.

From Madrid, Hervás is roughly two and a half hours by car; from there, Cáceres is a further hour and a half south, and Trujillo forty-five minutes beyond that. The region sits naturally between Castile and the Portuguese border, making it an effective link for a cross-border itinerary rather than an isolated stop.

Because Extremadura borders Portugal directly, this route is frequently used to connect a Spanish itinerary with Castelo de Vide, roughly ninety minutes from Cáceres, allowing travellers to experience both sides of a shared converso history without a long transfer. The architectural continuities between Hervás and Castelo de Vide — narrow granite streets, similar house forms — are especially clear when the two are visited within the same week.
