A Spain-Only Sephardic Heritage Route

Toledo was home to one of medieval Iberia's most significant Jewish communities, its two surviving synagogues — Santa María la Blanca and El Tránsito — now among the best-preserved Jewish buildings in Europe. Córdoba's judería, birthplace of Maimonides, retains its narrow medieval street pattern around a modest fourteenth-century synagogue. Girona's Call, one of the best-documented in Europe, includes the Bonastruc ça Porta centre and a warren of stairs and passages largely unchanged since the expulsion.

A natural sequence runs Madrid to Toledo (under an hour), Toledo to Córdoba (roughly two and a half hours by car or a shorter high-speed rail segment), and separately Barcelona to Girona (about ninety minutes). Because Girona sits in Catalonia and the others in central and southern Spain, most itineraries treat it as a distinct add-on rather than a single continuous drive.

This route is built for travellers whose interest is specifically Spanish — the Almohad and Mudéjar influences on synagogue architecture, the Reconquista's effect on Jewish communities, and the 1492 Alhambra Decree that ended nearly eight centuries of Jewish life in Spain. Each city is given full days rather than brief stops, allowing for museum visits, walking the judería at length, and understanding the urban logic of the medieval quarter.

A private driver-guide or, where distances favour it, a combination of high-speed rail and local guides manages the route, with hotels selected within or near each historic quarter. Given the distances between Castile and Catalonia, most travellers choose either a Castile-and-Andalusia sequence or a Catalonia-focused extension rather than combining all three in a single week.
