Castile and León preserve some of Spain's most complete medieval urban fabric, and with it, a dense concentration of former Jewish quarters in Toledo, Segovia and Ávila. This route moves slowly through that landscape.
Toledo's judería is the best known, but Segovia's former Jewish quarter, clustered near the cathedral and Alcázar, and Ávila's, tucked against the city's Romanesque walls, are equally well documented and considerably quieter. Together they illustrate how Jewish communities in Castile were integrated into the civic and commercial life of these cities before 1492.
From Madrid, Segovia is under an hour by car, Ávila a further hour southwest, and Toledo about ninety minutes south of Ávila or an hour directly from Madrid — a loop of roughly 350 kilometres comfortably managed over five to six days with time to walk each town properly rather than rush between them.
Beyond Jewish history, the route takes in Ávila's intact medieval walls — among the best preserved in Europe — and Segovia's Roman aqueduct and Alcázar, giving the itinerary a broader architectural context for understanding how Jewish, Christian and Muslim communities shared these urban spaces under changing political control across the medieval period.
