Andalusia hosted one of the most sophisticated Jewish communities of the medieval world under Al-Andalus, producing scholars, physicians and poets before the Reconquista and eventual expulsion. This route follows that arc through Córdoba, Seville and Granada.
Córdoba under the Caliphate was a centre of Jewish intellectual life, home to Maimonides and to a Jewish quarter that still bears his name in its central square. Seville's Santa Cruz district occupies the site of its former judería, and Granada's Alhambra — the last Muslim stronghold in Iberia — fell in the same year, 1492, that the Catholic Monarchs issued the decree expelling Spain's Jews.
The natural sequence is Seville, Córdoba (roughly ninety minutes north) and Granada (a further two and a half hours east), forming a triangle of around 350 kilometres best driven privately rather than on fixed rail schedules that don't align with heritage-site opening hours. Five to seven days allows full days in each city.
The route pays particular attention to how Islamic, Jewish and Christian architectural traditions overlapped in this period — visible in Córdoba's synagogue, built in Mudéjar style, and in the broader urban fabric of each city's old quarter. Guides address the Alhambra Decree of 1492 directly, as the legal instrument that ended organised Jewish life in Spain and set many families on the path toward Portugal, where a further forced conversion followed five years later.
