Ribadavia and the Jewish Quarter of Galicia's Wine Country

Ribadavia, in the heart of Galicia's Ribeiro wine region, preserves one of the most significant Jewish quarters in northern Spain, its stone streets and courtyards giving a rare regional counterpoint to the better-known Castilian and Catalan juderías.

    What Remains Today

Ribadavia's judería, centred on the streets around Praza da Magdalena and Rúa da Merced, retains its medieval scale, stone houses with distinctive doorways, and a small interpretation centre dedicated to the town's Jewish history. No synagogue survives as an identifiable structure, but the district's integrity within the wider historic town, itself largely unaltered since the medieval period, makes it one of the better regional examples outside the major Castilian and Catalan cities.

    Historical Background

Ribadavia's Jewish community developed from the twelfth century around the town's role in the wine trade of the Ribeiro region, one of Galicia's most productive agricultural districts. The community endured the pressures of 1391 and the increasingly restrictive climate of the fifteenth century before the 1492 expulsion, after which many Galician Jews, like their Castilian counterparts, crossed into northern Portugal, some settling in communities that would themselves face expulsion within five years.

Galicia's Wine Trade and Jewish Commerce

Ribadavia's economy, then as now centred on Ribeiro wine production, gave its Jewish community a distinctive commercial profile compared with the court-oriented communities of Castile, engaged directly in viticulture, trade financing and the export networks that moved Galician wine along the Atlantic coast, a detail that resonates naturally with our own food-and-wine-oriented itineraries.

    How We Visit

Ribadavia is visited with a private guide through the judería, generally combined with a Ribeiro wine tasting, as part of a northern route linking Galicia with the Tui border crossing into Portugal.
