A Forum Town
Linhares received its foral — its royal charter of rights and obligations — in 1169, placing it among the earliest chartered towns of the young Portuguese kingdom. Like other forum towns, it hosted a Jewish community within its walls, with the judiaria occupying a defined area of the medieval street plan.
The town's medieval fabric is unusually intact: the castle keep, the Romanesque church with its attributed Grão Vasco panel, the pelourinho and the paved central square form a complete picture of a thirteenth-century Beira town, within which the Jewish quarter can still be walked.
