Jewish Heritage in Gouveia: Wool, Conversos and a Painter of Portuguese Modernism

Gouveia sits on the northwestern slopes of the Serra da Estrela in the heart of wool country, and its history is inseparable from the New Christian merchant families who ran that trade after 1497. The town is also the birthplace of Abel Manta, one of the defining painters of Portuguese modernism, from a family of Jewish descent.

The Wool Economy and the Conversos

The Serra da Estrela's wool trade was the economic engine of the Beiras for centuries, and across the region it rested heavily on New Christian capital, credit and craftsmanship. Gouveia's converso families were part of the network that linked mountain production to the markets of Lisbon and the export trade — a fact documented in Inquisition proceedings as well as commercial records.

The town's medieval judiaria occupied part of the old centre, and the urban fabric of the historic core, climbing the hillside below the Serra, retains the character of a prosperous pre-modern wool town.

    Abel Manta

Gouveia's most celebrated modern son, the painter Abel Manta (1888–1982), came from a family of Jewish descent and became a central figure of Portuguese modernism. The town's municipal museum holds a significant collection of his work, giving Gouveia a cultural dimension unusual for a town of its size.

Manta's career — from Lisbon to Paris and back — belongs to the twentieth-century chapter of Portuguese Jewish history, a reminder that the story did not end with the Inquisition.

    How We Visit Gouveia

Gouveia fits naturally into a Serra da Estrela day that includes Seia and the mountain's high country, or as a stop between the Beira Interior and the Douro. The town rewards an unhurried visit: the museum, the historic centre and, in season, the cherry orchards for which the surrounding valley is famous.
