The Three Capitals Heritage Route: Lisbon, Madrid, Toledo

Though Lisbon and Madrid are national capitals with distinct histories, their Jewish communities were connected by continuous movement of families before, during and after the respective expulsion and conversion decrees. Toledo, once Spain's political and religious centre, sits almost precisely between the two, making it a natural midpoint rather than a detour.

Lisbon to Madrid is roughly six hours by private car via Extremadura, or a short flight; Madrid to Toledo is under an hour. Most itineraries fly or transfer between Lisbon and Madrid and drive the shorter Madrid–Toledo segment, structuring the route as three distinct city stays of two to three days each.

Lisbon's Jewish history is largely one of erasure and forced conversion, with few standing structures; Toledo's is one of substantial surviving architecture, including two former synagogues; Madrid itself has comparatively little visible Jewish heritage but serves as a practical hub and a place to address the broader Spanish narrative before travelling on to Toledo. The contrast between these three cities gives the route its intellectual shape.

Flights or private transfers between Lisbon and Madrid are arranged to fit the traveller's preferred pace, and Toledo is typically visited as a full-day excursion from Madrid or an overnight stay.
