The Spring Blossom Heritage Route

The Fundão region and parts of the Serra da Estrela produce some of Portugal's finest cherries, and the surrounding hillsides bloom with cherry and almond blossom typically from late February through April depending on altitude and year, a period that also brings milder temperatures to the mountain roads around Belmonte and Trancoso.

The route bases near Belmonte or Fundão for three to four nights during the blossom window, with day excursions to Trancoso (forty-five minutes) and the Cova da Beira valley, before continuing toward the Douro (roughly two hours) where vine budding follows a similar seasonal rhythm.

Spring avoids both the summer heat that can make extended mountain walking uncomfortable and the occasional winter snow that closes higher roads, making it the season most guides recommend for the Serra da Estrela specifically, in addition to the blossom itself, which is genuinely striking across the Fundão valley.

Timing is coordinated year to year with local contacts who track the blossom's progress, since the exact window shifts with weather; a private driver-guide adjusts the day's route accordingly. Belmonte visits within this route remain subject to authorization outside weekends and Shabbat.
