Castles and Jewish Quarters: A Route Through Medieval Fortification and Settlement

Towns such as Marvão, Castelo de Vide, Trancoso and Guarda combined defensive fortification with resident Jewish communities whose quarters were typically positioned within the town walls, reflecting their formal status as legally protected, taxed residents rather than an incidental population. This spatial arrangement is documented in municipal charters and surviving urban plans.

Castle towns also served strategic frontier functions, particularly near the Spanish border, adding a layer of national defence history to the same physical setting.

From Marvão and Castelo de Vide (20 minutes apart), the route continues to Trancoso (2.5 hours) and Guarda (a further 40 minutes), covering roughly 300 kilometres of fortified towns across the Alentejo and Beira Interior.

This route suits six days, allowing a full visit to both the castle and judiaria in each town rather than a rushed pairing.

The positioning of judiarias relative to castle walls and town gates reflects deliberate medieval urban planning, often documented in the same royal charters that established a town's defensive status, and this spatial logic is a genuine subject of architectural-historical study. It is not a coincidental pairing but a structural feature of how these towns were built.

Marvão and Castelo de Vide in particular are frequently cited together in Portuguese heritage scholarship for this combined defensive and communal character.
