Tortosa and the Great Disputation of 1413–1414

Tortosa, on the lower Ebro, was the setting for the Disputation of Tortosa of 1413–1414, an extended, papally sponsored debate between Christian theologians and rabbinic representatives that proved devastating for Jewish communities across the Crown of Aragon.

    What Remains Today

Tortosa's former Jewish quarter lay near the cathedral and the Suda castle, its outline traceable in the old town though little structure survives directly from the medieval community. The city's cathedral and castle, both substantially medieval, provide the backdrop against which the Disputation itself is best understood, since the sessions were held over many months in the presence of the antipope Benedict XIII and a large audience of local dignitaries.

    Historical Background

Tortosa held a modest Jewish community from the twelfth century, engaged in trade along the Ebro. Its historical significance rests less on the size of its own community than on the events staged there in 1413–1414: a disputation orchestrated by the convert Jerónimo de Santa Fe and sponsored by Benedict XIII, intended to demonstrate Christian truths from rabbinic texts and to pressure Jewish communities across Aragon into conversion.

    The Disputation's Consequences

The Disputation of Tortosa, running over sixty-nine sessions across more than a year, produced enormous pressure on the rabbis compelled to attend and, in its aftermath, a wave of conversions across the Crown of Aragon that further weakened communities already reeling from the 1391 riots. It stands alongside the Barcelona Disputation of 1263, involving Nahmanides, as one of the two most significant staged Jewish-Christian debates of medieval Iberia.
