Jewish Heritage in Torres Novas: A Judiaria within the Medieval Walls

Torres Novas, in the Ribatejo heartland between Tomar and Santarém, kept a medieval Jewish community within its walled historic core, and the quarter's streets are still traceable in the town's oldest fabric. It is one of the Ribatejo's quieter heritage towns — and all the more rewarding for it.

    The Medieval Quarter

The town's Jewish community is documented in the medieval period, with the judiaria occupying a defined zone of the old town below the castle. Torres Novas was a place of some significance in the medieval kingdom — its castle and walls attest to that — and its Jewish community participated in the commercial life of a town on the route between the Tagus and the interior.

The historic centre, with its castle ruins, Manueline details and market square, preserves the scale and grain of a pre-modern Ribatejo town, within which the judiaria's streets can still be walked with a knowledgeable guide.

    After 1497

As throughout the Ribatejo, the forced conversions absorbed Torres Novas's Jewish families into the town's New Christian population, and the region figures in the Inquisition's documentation across the following centuries. The Jewish layer of the town's history is one read in records and urban fabric rather than standing monuments.
