A Community within the Walls
Braga's medieval Jewish quarter stood inside the Roman and medieval walls of Bracara Augusta, and the community is documented in royal records from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Like other Minho towns, Braga's Jews worked in commerce, crafts and the professions, under the customary framework of the communa and its own internal governance.
The street pattern of the old town retains the tight grain typical of Portuguese judiarias, and the quarter's position — close to both the market and the seat of ecclesiastical power — reflects the ambiguous status Jewish communities held: protected by the Crown, watched by the Church.
