Évora and the Inquisition
Évora hosted one of Portugal's principal Inquisition tribunals from the sixteenth century onward, making it a centre of both scholarly Jewish life before 1497 and the subsequent persecution of converso communities after. The city's former Jewish quarter lay near its Roman temple and cathedral, and its history is generally addressed through its role as a tribunal seat and university town rather than through surviving synagogue architecture, of which little remains standing.
