This city is also birthplace of some relevant figures in Portuguese history. It was birthplace of Afonso Paiva in 1443, a Jew nominated by the king to explore and seek out information the Sea Route to India. However the most notorious may have been a doctor by the name of Amato Lusitano, son to Crypto-Jews, who after completion to his studies in Salamanca was unable to return to Portugal, because of the Inquisition, forcing him to travel to Antwerp where he published the first of many books on medicine.
