Royal Charters and Jewish Quarters: A Route Through Medieval Administration

Portuguese kings, particularly Afonso III and Dinis I, issued forais — municipal charters — that specifically addressed Jewish residents' rights, obligations and physical quarters within a town. These documents, many preserved in national archives, are a primary source for understanding the legal architecture of Jewish life in medieval Portugal.

This is a less commonly told version of the region's Jewish history — one centred on administration, taxation and royal protection rather than persecution alone, and it complicates any simple narrative of Portugal's medieval Jewish experience.

The route connects Tomar and Castelo de Vide (roughly 2 hours apart), Trancoso and Guarda (each an additional hour or so), and can extend to Évora, about 2.5 hours south of Guarda, where charter records for the Alentejo region are especially well documented.
