Guides and Scholarly Interpretation on a Heritage Journey

Our driver-guides combine local licensing and driving competence with a working knowledge of Portuguese Jewish and converso history, from the medieval judiarias to the 1497 forced conversions and the crypto-Jewish communities that survived in isolated mountain villages for centuries. This dual role means the drive between sites is as informative as the visits themselves.

Guides are prepared to answer questions across a range of depth, from a general overview suitable for a first visit to more detailed historical or architectural discussion for travellers with deeper background in the subject.

Interpretation is calibrated to the group rather than delivered as a fixed script, since travellers arrive with very different levels of prior knowledge — some are visiting after years of independent research into the period, others are encountering this history for the first time.

Our guides are trained to gauge this early in the journey and adjust accordingly, offering more historical detail where there is appetite for it, and keeping visits more accessible and narrative-driven where that suits the group better.

At sites with their own curatorial staff or local historians, our guides work alongside that expertise rather than in place of it, translating and contextualising as needed so information delivered on-site by local specialists remains accessible to travellers.
