April is widely considered one of the finest months to travel through Sephardic Portugal, with reliable spring weather, long daylight and the countryside at its greenest.
Lisbon typically reaches the high teens to low twenties Celsius, with occasional light rain. The Alentejo is at its most photogenic, with wildflowers still widespread and pleasant daytime warmth. Belmonte and Trancoso in the Serra da Estrela region enjoy comfortable, mild days with cool but rarely cold nights, and the Douro valley begins its green pre-harvest phase.
Daylight now extends to roughly 20:30, allowing for relaxed evenings and unhurried dinners after a full day of visits. Freedom Day (25 April) is a national public holiday commemorating the 1974 revolution, when museums and offices generally close; when Easter falls in April, the same weekend considerations apply as in March. Visitor numbers begin rising toward the busier late-spring period.
April brings the height of asparagus and fava bean season in the Alentejo, along with the first of the season's fresh cheeses. Lisbon's restaurant scene is in full swing, and outdoor dining becomes comfortable throughout the month.
